These types of X-Ray studies are often used to visualize the gastrointestinal system to give us information on the intestinal tract, stomach, esophagus, and small intestine. There are prep procedures that patients must follow prior to their procedure.

PRE-Appointment Preparation
- If you have experienced a reaction to contrast dye in the past please contact our office prior to your appointment.
- Nothing to eat or drink 2 hours before the examination.
- Upper GI
PRE-Appointment Preparation
- Nothing to eat or drink after midnight.
- Your appointment could last 45 minutes.
- GI Small Bowel
PRE-Appointment Preparation
- Nothing to eat or drink after midnight.
- Your appointment could last longer than 3-5 hours.
- Barium Enema
PRE-Appointment Preparation
Buy these things at your local drug/grocery store before you start your prep:
- Dulcolax (Bisacodyl) Laxatives
- 1 Bottle of Magnesium Citrate
- Dulcolax Suppositories
- Plenty of clear liquids and nonresidue foods: NO fruits, vegetables, fiber cereal, or breads. Clear liquids to include water, coffee, tea, clear juice (apple, cranberry, grape are OK, but no juice drinks with pulp), Kool-Aid and Jell-O.
Barium Enema Instructions:
DAY BEFORE EXAMINATION
- Nonresidue diet (NO fruits, vegetables, fiber cereal or breads). Drink 8 ounces of clear liquids every hour until 5 p.m. (NO drinks with pulp i.e: orange juice or grapefruit juice).
- 4:30 p.m.: drink 1 bottle of Magnesium Citrate
- 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.: 8 ounces of water EVERY HOUR
- 7:30 p.m.: 2 Dulcolax (Bisacodyl) tabs by mouth
- 9:30 p.m.: Nothing by mouth until exam (you may take regular medications with small amount of water ONLY ENOUGH THAT IS NECESSARY TO GET MEDS DOWN).
DAY OF THE EXAMINATION
- NOTHING TO EAT OR DRINK (you may take regular medications with small amount of water ONLY ENOUGH THAT IS NECESSARY TO GET MEDS DOWN).
- Use ONE Dulcolax suppository TWO hours prior to scheduled exam.
